What is the hepatitis A and B vaccination for?
The combined hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccine protects against hepatitis A and hepatitis B virus infections.
Hepatitis A infection most often occurs after consuming water or food contaminated with the virus, especially raw products.
Hepatitis B infection most commonly occurs through contact with infected blood and other body fluids, e.g. during medical procedures (including dental procedures), treatments in beauty or hair salons, as well as through sexual contact.
Vaccination is one of the most effective methods of preventing hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
The package includes one dose of the combined vaccine, intended for persons aged 16 years and older, providing protection against both hepatitis A and hepatitis B viruses, and the administration of the vaccine.
How does the vaccine work?
Vaccination provides protection against infection with hepatitis A and hepatitis B viruses.
Protective immunity against hepatitis A and hepatitis B infection is achieved within 2–4 weeks after vaccination.
The full vaccination course provides long-term protection. The effectiveness of the vaccine is very high, and protection after completing the full vaccination schedule usually lasts for life.
Receiving the combined vaccine is more convenient than receiving single-component vaccines, as the number of required injections is reduced from five to three.
How many doses are included in the vaccination schedule?
The standard primary vaccination schedule consists of 3 doses of the vaccine.
The first dose is administered at any chosen date, the second dose no earlier than 1 month later, and the third dose no earlier than 6 months after the first dose.
It is possible, for example before travelling, to carry out vaccination using an accelerated schedule.
Full immunity is achieved after receiving 3 doses of the vaccine.
When is it worth getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and B?
Vaccination is recommended for people who:
-
frequently eat meals in random places or drink beverages with ice cubes,
-
use cosmetic treatments,
-
plan trips abroad, especially to countries with low sanitary and epidemiological standards,
-
are exposed to contact with infected blood or body fluids.
