Pulmonologist – what do they treat?

A pulmonologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD, chronic cough, shortness of breath, pneumonia, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, pneumothorax, pneumoconiosis, sarcoidosis, and chest trauma. A pulmonologist can also order specialist tests, including spirometry, bronchoscopy, or sleep studies.

Scope of a pulmonary consultation

During a private visit, a pulmonologist may:

• conduct a detailed medical interview and examine the respiratory system;
• assess symptoms and plan further diagnostics;
• indicate appropriate preparations used in the management of lung and bronchial conditions;
• order imaging, functional, and laboratory tests (e.g. spirometry, X-ray, polysomnography);
• refer the patient for hospitalization or further consultations with specialists;
• issue a medical leave certificate (L4), if necessary.

What does a visit to a pulmonologist look like?

The visit lasts 15 minutes. You should arrive no later than 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment time. The service is provided only at the medical facility selected during the purchase.

During the first visit, the pulmonologist will conduct a detailed interview about the symptoms, their intensity, and possible causes. Then, a physical examination will be performed to assess the respiratory system. The pulmonologist may order additional tests such as spirometry, chest X-ray, blood tests, or pulmonary function tests. Based on the results, the patient will receive treatment recommendations or be referred for further diagnostics.

What symptoms should prompt a visit to the pulmonologist?

You should consult a pulmonologist if you experience symptoms indicating problems with the respiratory system, such as:

• a chronic cough lasting more than 8 weeks;
• hoarseness lasting more than 3 weeks;
• shortness of breath (feeling of air hunger or difficulty breathing) occurring even with minor exertion or at rest;
• wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness, which may indicate bronchial asthma;
• coughing up blood;
• abnormal breathing – fast or slow, shallow or deep, irregular breathing patterns;
• suspected occupational lung disease (e.g. pneumoconiosis);
• lung injuries resulting from chest trauma;
• pleural effusion;
• recurrent pneumonia;
• snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, chronic fatigue, night or morning headaches;
• frequent nighttime urination;
• exertional dyspnea, which may suggest hypoventilation and hypoxemia during sleep.

Pediatric pulmonologist consultations

Children should see a pediatric pulmonologist if they present with:

• congenital defects;
• genetic diseases (e.g. cystic fibrosis);
• respiratory disorders, such as recurrent infections or chronic cough;
• suspected allergies;
• a foreign body in the airways.

Do I need a referral to see a pulmonologist?

A referral is not required for a private pulmonology visit. In the case of visits covered by the National Health Fund (NFZ), a referral is mandatory.

How long does a pulmonologist visit last?

A standard consultation lasts approximately 15 minutes. If additional diagnostic tests are required, the visit may take longer.

Can a pulmonologist issue sick leave?

Yes, if symptoms interfere with daily functioning, the pulmonologist can issue a medical leave certificate (L4).
