Doppler ultrasonography of renal arteries

Duplex Doppler ultrasound of the renal arteries is a non-invasive examination to assess the renal arteries, blood flow in the renal arteries and intrarenal flow. The test uses the Doppler effect to assess the speed and direction of blood flow in the blood vessels.

Indications for the examination include:

• diagnosis of hypertension in young people,
• arterial pressure resistant to pharmacological treatment,
• diagnosis of renal artery aneurysms and fistulas.

 

The test is also performed after kidney transplantation and after stent implantation and balloon angioplasty.

The doppler ultrasound examination of the renal arteries is similar to other ultrasound examinations. The examination is performed through the abdomen – the patient lies down during the examination. The doctor places the head of the device on the patient’s body and moves it around while assessing the image seen on the monitor.

This examination is non-invasive and painless. Once it is completed, you can return to your daily activities straight away.

• You should bring documentation with you to the examination, such as hospital records and the results of other examinations that may be relevant (if any).
• There are no contraindications to this examination.
• The duration of the examination is approximately 15-20 minutes.
• The service can only be provided at the medical facility indicated at the time of purchase. You need to arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment.
• The patient receives the result of the examination in the form of a medical impression together with a photo. All documentation is printed during the appointment and the patient receives the original result. An impression of the result is also available online.

You should report for the examination at least 6 hours after your last meal. Do not smoke or chew gum on the day of the examination. A light diet without bloating foods is recommended 2-3 days before the examination.
