What is alkaline phosphatase (ALP)?

This is a blood test performed to determine the level of alkaline phosphatase.
The test is used to diagnose gallbladder inflammation and diseases of the skeletal system.

Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme found mainly in the bones and the liver. The liver eliminates alkaline phosphatase through bile.

What does the test diagnose?

The determination is performed to:

• diagnose gallbladder inflammation,
• detect liver and bone diseases.

Increased activity occurs in:

• hyperparathyroidism,
• vitamin D3 deficiency,
• Paget’s disease,
• Cushing’s syndrome,
• bone cancers,
• intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholestasis,
• liver cancers,
• long-term treatment with furosemide.

When is it worth having an ALP test?

The ALP test is recommended for people who experience symptoms suggesting liver or kidney dysfunction, including:

• fatigue,
• yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes,
• bad breath,
• abdominal pain and vomiting,
• swelling,
• bone pain.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) – what does the test involve?

• The test involves drawing blood from a vein, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.
• How long does blood collection take? From a few to several seconds.
• Improper preparation for the test may result in an unreliable result.
• Blood should be collected in the morning hours.

How to prepare for the ALP test?

• Do not consume alcohol for 2–3 days before the test.
• Limit coffee and tea intake for at least 12 hours before blood collection.
• Avoid sources of stress.

On the day of the test:

• The patient should arrive fasting – refrain from eating for approximately 12 hours before the appointment.
• In the morning, a glass of water may be consumed.
• If possible, blood should be drawn before taking the morning dose of medications, unless otherwise advised by a doctor.
• Before the test, the patient should rest for 10–15 minutes (in a seated position).
• Physical activity should be limited to a moderate level, e.g. walking or climbing stairs. Excessive exertion may affect laboratory test results.

ALP reference range

Reference ranges vary depending on the patient’s age. Final interpretation of the result is made by a physician, taking into account the reference values used by the laboratory.

• The blood test result will be available within 3 working days.
• The result can be collected at the reception desk of the selected medical facility.
• Online access to the result is also available. To do so, please obtain an access password from the reception desk of the selected facility.
• In the case of abnormal results, consultation with a physician is recommended for a detailed discussion.
