An ENT specialist diagnoses and treats diseases of the ear, nose, paranasal sinuses, larynx, and throat, including inflammation, hearing, smell, and taste disorders, as well as conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract.

Indications for a visit to an ENT specialist

Symptoms may include:

• ear pain, a feeling of a blocked ear, persistent tinnitus, hearing loss,
• unusual discharge from the ear or nose (e.g., with traces of blood),
• sore throat,
• sinusitis,
• laryngitis,
• persistent hoarseness,
• problems with the tonsils – enlargement of the palatine tonsils and the pharyngeal tonsil (adenoids),
• snoring,
• swallowing disorders (dysphagia),
• deviated nasal septum,
• disorders of smell and taste,
• frequent dizziness and balance disorders.

What does the consultation include?

During the consultation, the ENT specialist:

• conducts a medical interview and an otolaryngological examination, including examination of the larynx,
• makes a diagnosis,
• provides medical recommendations,
• issues referrals for tests, specialist consultations, and hospital treatment,
• issues medical leave certificates.

During the visit it is recommended to:

• inform the doctor about all concerning symptoms, including their duration, frequency, and any worsening in recent days.
• make sure that the recommendations provided by the doctor have been clearly understood.

The consultation lasts 15 minutes.

What symptoms should prompt a visit to an ENT specialist?

Patients usually visit an ENT specialist when symptoms persist for a longer time or recur despite home treatment. The most common reasons for a consultation include:

• ear pain, hearing loss, tinnitus,
• chronic runny nose, blocked nose, sinus pain,
• hoarseness, sore throat, a sensation of a “lump” in the throat.

Any symptom lasting longer than 2–3 weeks should be consulted with a specialist.

Can an ENT specialist refer a patient for diagnostic tests?

Yes, an ENT specialist can order tests necessary to establish a diagnosis. These may include audiometry, imaging tests of the sinuses, nasal or throat endoscopy, or basic laboratory tests. The scope of testing depends on the symptoms and the doctor’s decision. In the case of a private consultation, diagnostic tests are usually paid for separately.

How much does a private ENT consultation cost?

The cost of a private ENT consultation in Poland usually ranges from PLN 120 to PLN 350.

Do you need a referral to see an ENT specialist?

A referral is required only for appointments within the National Health Fund (NFZ) system. For a private consultation, no referral is needed regardless of the patient’s age or type of symptoms.
